India Proposes Mandatory “Country-of-Origin” Filters on E-Commerce Sites to Boost Atmanirbhar Bharat

In a move aimed at promoting transparency and boosting domestic manufacturing, the Department of Consumer Affairs has proposed mandatory “country-of-origin” filters for all e-commerce platforms operating in India.

The proposal, outlined in the draft Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) (Second) Amendment Rules, 2025, mandates that every online retail platform selling imported products must provide a searchable and sortable filter allowing consumers to identify the country of origin of each listed item.

According to the official notification published on the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and covered by DD News and The Times of India, the amendment seeks to empower Indian consumers to make informed purchasing decisions and support domestic products — a key goal of the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Vocal for Local” initiatives.

Officials said that the move will not only enhance transparency but also encourage fair competition between domestic and imported goods. “This measure will strengthen consumer choice and make Indian-made products more visible and discoverable on online platforms,” a senior official from the Consumer Affairs Ministry stated.

The proposed amendment is currently open for public and stakeholder feedback until November 22, 2025. E-commerce companies such as Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, and others may soon need to update their user interfaces, product listings, and labelling disclosures to comply with the new requirements once finalized.

Industry experts believe that this change could have wide-ranging implications for product sourcing strategies and online retail operations in India. While it supports domestic manufacturers, it also calls for significant technical updates to digital platforms handling millions of SKUs daily.

The move marks another step by the Indian government toward enhancing consumer empowerment, supply chain transparency, and self-reliance in the growing digital commerce sector.
